If you don’t have enough time to leave shore for several days but still wish to see the best of the near shore Keys, come with me for a day charter. On a balmy summer day, we can dive or snorkel in the Marine Sanctuary or west of the refuge in spots where the big dive boats don’t go. For a day charter, we might consider one of the following places.
Cottrell Key - A large reef, 8' of water, lots of corals and fish. Kayak around the island.
Split Rock - Patch reef, 8' of water. The Great Coral heads come as close as 2" of the surface. My favorite snorkeling spot when water is clear (usually not in winter). Superior summer destination when you'd rather to do a lot of first-rate snorkeling and less kayaking. Sometimes there is one other boat but usually we have this great place to ourselves.
Man Key - Patch reef, 5'-10' deep, good corals and fish. Not best in winter for snorkeling. This area offers first-rate kayaking with lots of close-by islands. We can spend days back there! Many beautiful sponge gardens and other interesting bottoms to delight the eye by kayak or snorkel. Plan to spend extra time on this trip, but not to spend a dime more!
The Outer Reef – The outer reef is about 7 miles south of Key West depending on wind direction, visibility, and avoiding the crowds. I know the finger reefs well and we have lots of possibilities.
